Photo 101

Recently took a 2 day photo class at Ojectifs and have finally understood, more or less, the basic differences between shutterspeed, aperture and ISO. I now take my pictures in manual mode to the great regret of my kids who complain that I'm way too slow. Anyway, loving my newly learned skills. Think the colors are great, never use my flash anymore and learned how to shoot still lifes. Would definitely recommend their classes - check out their website as they have classes for all levels.

Art Stage Singapore 2012

The second edition of Art Stage Singapore is on right now til this Sunday at Marina Bay Sands. My advice is definitely go see. Without doubt, my favorite aspect of this fair is getting to know more about the Asian art scene. The fair definitely has a strong Asian focus (there are a couple European galleries represented, but it's definitely a minority) and personally it's a whole roster of new galleries and artists for me to discover. This year one of my personal favorites is a collective of artists from Kuala Lumpur who recreated a studio photo from the 1960s - the attention to detail is unreal. The above painting is an auto-portrait of Thai artist, Navin Rawanchaikul, who created a mural specifically for Art Stage depicting the Who's Who of the Asia Art World. Visitors were definitely getting a kick out of recognizing themselves. I'm off tonight for a second round and will try to remember and learn more artist names, but when it comes to Asian names I'm pretty much hopeless.

Skating around

As of this Sunday, we have a new weekend activity. Big Z has taken to skateboarding and ever since we found out that East Coast has one of the world's ten best skate parks that's where we hung yesterday. She happily skated amongst an all boy crew, maybe that's the appeal. The boys were super friendly about giving her advice and she already wants to return next weekend.

Speaking of skateboarding, we came across the paintings and photographs of the very cool local street art artist: Trase One at the exhibition "Off the Wall." The show features a collaboration between 18 graffiti artists from France and Singapore and Trase One's skateboarding photos were definitely our fave.

Singapore Art Scene

My favorite Singaporean artist, Izziyana Suhaimi, is having a new show this weekend at the Little Drom Store. My advice is to definitely check out Izzy's show if you're in town. I'm in love with Izzy's work. I love her intricate ink and watercolor drawings with embroidered or knitted details. The works featured at the Little Drom Store are part of her "Friends to Keep you Warm" series.
Happy Weekend
